How to: Track movement using the N95 & Google Maps/Earth
April 18, 2007 by Dario Soltani

The Nokia N95 has the ability to store your movement and speed data to a .kml file which can be used to track your route using Google Maps. The route & speed data is displayed graphically in a Goggle earth as a satmap (as shown in the image above). This is a great feature, i.e. if you wanna find out which route takes you to work the fastest.
Here’s a little guide on how you use this functionality:
You’ll need to download Nokia Sports Tracker (free application for your smartphone) and install the application on your smartphone. Then you’ll need to move around and track your movement using the application.
Once you’ve tracked some data you can export your route & speed . In workout summary choose Options - Save as - Export to Google Earth.
This will result in a .kml file which you transfer to your computer. This file can be used to visually display your route in Google Maps (in your browser) or Google Earth (pc application).
- To view your path in Google Maps you’ll need to specify where you’re .kml file is located (and it has to be located on a webserver). You do this directly in the Google Maps “Search the map” bar. You’ll find an example here.
- If you’ve installed Google Earth properly all you’ll need to do now is to double-click on the .kml file and you’ll see your route visually in Google Earth. You can download and use Google Earth here for free.
