Sitting at work and waiting for these slow systems to get up to speed I stumbled upon some very interesting information. For those of you who have had the chance to test the Nokia N95 perhaps you’ve already noticed how the firmware handles the Sharpness, doesn’t usually end in a good way. There’s been talk about the presence of a bug in the firmware but as of now Nokia hasn’t confirmed nor denied it. I believe this is mainly because it’s something that the general user doesn’t notice or complaints about. A picture says more than I’m willing to write at the moment, because I have a break coming up soon, so take a look at the picture below taken with the N95.
- In the left picture it’s clearly visible that the edge-enhancement that’s applied does more damage than good, take special notice of the right edge of the key.
- The middle picture is taken with sharpness set to ’soft’ and looks so-so.
- The picture on the right looks the most natural among the above and was shot with the cameras default settings, that is no scene mode was selected.
The problem arises when you select a scene mode the sharpness is set to hard and edges are greatly enhanced… but the phone fails to restore the sharpness setting even when the scene mode is set back to auto. Hopefully by making people aware of this, it will be noticed and acknowledge by Nokia as a bug and it’ll get fixed as they release their next firmware. Source
