Geo-locating photos with Symbian
June 10, 2007 by Dario Soltani
If you’re a proud owner of symbian device with a bluetooth GPS module or even better one with integrated GPS you’ll now be able to geotag your photos on the fly, if not, you’ll still be able to make use of a new and exciting software recently available on the market for geotag photos!
Previously you’d have to manually tag your photos with geographic information but now there is new software available for Symbian phones that automates the entire process for you! From now on there’ll be no hassle to share photos with loved ones and relatives, be it on vacation or any other location. No longer will you be on the phone trying to describe your location, how to get there and what it looks like. Just snap a photo and share it with your friends on the fly, they’ll directly know where you are from the geotag in the photo. Connect this to a global database and you’ll be able to download pictures to your mobile while heading to a specific destination, knowing in advance how it looks like and what to expect; much like GPS map software but more personal.
Before this development you had to add location data manually to the meta data of the image but this has all changed! GPS modules have become so small that they can even be embedded under the skin of animals, to easier track cattle movement etc. So it’s not strange that we get them in our phones as well.
The specific software I’m referring to comes from locr and automatically adds geographic location data to the meta field of pictures that are taken. The software has undergone fast and vast development during the past weeks. The latest software now even supports retrieval of location data by a click on Google Earth Maps. As a last step, the images can easily be uploaded to software manufacturers gallery to share with others.
If you don’t have a Symbian device, don’t worry, the software is also available for PC and gives you the opportunity of geotagging your digital camera photos with the help of Google Earth Maps.
