08 n95 space impact lowres The true reason behind the delayed N gage launch

Nokia reported earlier that the N-gage platform (first planned to launch in November) will be delayed "a couple of weeks" as a result of software testing issues. According to NokNok the real reason is problems getting games to run on older models such as early N95’s and N93’s.

Having a background in game development I can only speculate on what the problems consist of. To my knowledge early N95 classics and newer N95 classics have the same hardware, leading me to think this must be a software issue. I’m not sure if the same case goes for the N93’s.

Software issues can be everything from old and incompatible drivers, problems with old API’s for graphics, sound etc and/or malfunctioning firmware. In either case, I believe Nokia needs to develop fixes for all the different cases and release firmware updates.

So my conclusion is – first we’ll have some firmware updates, then Nokia will launch the promised N-gage platform. We’ll know for sure in December.
