Archive your SMS with GSync!
January 22, 2008 by Asri al-Baker
PsiLoc, as usual, breaks the conventional barrier in application development. Lately, they came out with a number of innovative applications like PsiLoc Locatik, PsiLoc SoftVariant and so on. What does GSync do? Well, to be honest, nothing… I mean, GSync is an applicationt that you need to configure once and it will run in stealth mode in the background at pre-defined time intervals to sync your SMS inbox and sentbox into your Gmail account. Wait… Does that mean we can read our text messages in our Gmail? Errr.. Yes! But only for reading, you cant compose or reply SMS from your Gmail account. Read the review after the break.
Before I continue yakking about GSync, there are a few pre-requisites that you need to have to use it :
- Symbian S60 3rd Edition smartphone - check!
- a Gmail account - check!
- internet connection enabled (3G, GPRS or even WiFi) - check!
- install GSync - check!
All set, lets go!
When GSync is connected to the internet and doing it’s job, you wont notice anything because like I said before, it is a stealth application running in the background, hence, it does not interfere with your daily smartphone activities. You can call your girlfriend, or surf your favourite Symbian website (Aherm… www.simplysymbian.com) or typing your email to your boss explaining your absence today… without interruption.

The text messages (SMS) when synched with your Gmail account, are located in the SMS folder. This is another cool GSync feature where it creates a label called SMS and put all your text messages inside. Meaning you can just click on the SMS label and voila! All synced texts are inside your Gmail account.
Now this might sounds not very interesting for those who don’t have Gmail account. But for those who do, this is a neat and hi-tech way to archive your SMS messages. Furthermore, the synched SMS are neatly formatted. Here is how it looks like :-

To make it more useful, the information of the sender and receiver are also sent together which can be very useful especially if you want to use your SMS as court evidence. Who knows… Maybe your girlfriend wrongly sent an SMS to your number and you want to use it in court… Just one of those usage where it can be applied.

Conclusion
If there’s a competition about best innovation in the S60 application universe, I would like to nominate this small utility called GSync from Symbian veteran PsiLoc for making life easier (well… sort of…). Not only GSync is something unique, but it is also very useful. If you want a new and innovative way to keep your SMS for future reference, this is the app that you need. With GSync, your phone and your Gmail account are virtually united - for reading SMS and with that gigabytes of free storage inside Gmail, you need not to worry about running out of space for keeping your SMS archive. To PsiLoc, please make GSync available for UIQ 3 users as well…Definitely a keeper. Highly recommended!

I bought this product two weeks ago and after one week it ceased to work. Check groups for a lot of people in the same conditions. The producer is still promising to fix the problem: be aware before sending money.
I do have the same problem. After 2 weeks it just stops working!?!? now what?
