Video: Trying out YouTube for Mobile, official beta application

The ‘YouTube for Mobile’ application is still a beta and is sometimes a bit buggy, but it certainly streams video nice and has some cool menu effects.

I didn’t really see any point using this application as my Nokia N95 8GB supports Flash Light 3 which basically means I can just point my browser to www.youtube.com to browse and watch video’s just like on my PC. The application did however have a surprise – it supports uploading of videos! Uploads don’t work yet (at least not for me?) but it’s still nice to see such a feature coming up. This means we can shoot a video on our phones and then directly upload it to YouTube.

YouTube for Mobile features:

  • Access the highest ranked or most viewed videos.
  • Search and watch YouTube videos
  • Stay tuned to your subscriptions, playlists and favorite videos.
  • Upload videos directly from your phone.

Official YouTube installation instructions

Continue reading to find out how you can install this software on most phones with Java support.

Officially, the YouTube for Mobile application is available for Nokia’s N73, N95, E65, 6110, 6120 and Sony Ericsson’s k800 and w880, I did however find out this is a Java based software, so if your phone supports Java it’s a good chance you can download and use it. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

Instructions for people with officially supported phones (N73, N95, E65, 6110, 6120, k800 or w880):

  1. Launch your mobile webbrowser
  2. Navigate to http://m.youtube.com/app
  3. Download and install the YouTube application

Instructions for people with non-supported phones:

These instructions are very experimental. Don’t ask me if this will work on your specific model, I simply dont know. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

  1. Launch your mobile webbrowser
  2. Download the .jad file using your phone’s browser, here’s the URL:http://www.google.com/m/download/youtube/download?sign=1&make=Nokia&model=N95&ver=v1.0.1

This should make your phone to automatically download the .jar file, if that doesn’t work you can download it manually using this URL:

    http://www.google.com/m/download/youtube/apps/v1.0.1/en/minitube-101-n60_en.jar

  3. Install and have fun!
