Platform Security and Symbian Signed, a fast introduction
January 28, 2008
Symbian developer networks has published a paper where the reason behind Symbian signed system is explained and also what benefits users and developers have thanks to this sometimes time consuming and annoying process.
"Like celebrity, success can bring unwanted attention. For a successful software platform, that means the now-familiar crop of viruses, worms, trojans and the like, targeting the ordinary users of the platform. This is attention that mobile phone users can do without.
Symbian OS v9 introduces a new, system-wide platform security architecture, together with a signing program, Symbian Signed, that forms its public face and serves as gatekeeper to the platform.
For most users, this is probably not controversial. For Symbian OS developers, however, as anyone who has followed the developer forums will know, it is still a hot topic in the context of Symbian OS v9.
This paper aims to help developers through the ‘pain barrier’, as well as clarify the benefits which lie beyond. Platform security, after all, has a simple goal: to keep out the kinds of intentionally rogue software, or ‘malware’, which plague the PC world. Developers ignore that point at their peril."

Video: Trying out YouTube for Mobile, official beta application
January 24, 2008
The ‘YouTube for Mobile’ application is still a beta and is sometimes a bit buggy, but it certainly streams video nice and has some cool menu effects.
SimplySymbian trying out YouTube for Mobile
I didn’t really see any point using this application as my Nokia N95 8GB supports Flash Light 3 which basically means I can just point my browser to www.youtube.com to browse and watch video’s just like on my PC. The application did however have a surprise - it supports uploading of videos! Uploads don’t work yet (at least not for me?) but it’s still nice to see such a feature coming up. This means we can shoot a video on our phones and then directly upload it to YouTube.
YouTube for Mobile features:
- Access the highest ranked or most viewed videos.
- Search and watch YouTube videos
- Stay tuned to your subscriptions, playlists and favorite videos.
- Upload videos directly from your phone.

Official YouTube Mobile App in the pipeline
January 24, 2008

Yup, you read the title right. YouTube is developing it’s own mobile player/browser for it’s video collection. While browsing YouTube to watch my favourite videos just 10 minutes ago, I clicked http://www.youtube.com/mobile and on the right of the page, there’s a sentence saying
"*Available for Nokia’s N73, N95, E65, 6110, 6120 and SonyEricsson k800 and w880."
However, I dont have any of the above-mentioned S60 smartphones to test so I followed the link… and voila! There’s a *beta* version available for download directly using the phones listed. But I dont have any of the mentioned phone. Only an ageing E61i and a brand new N77 (ahermm….). I am not able to test the app directly because I tried to visit the link http://m.youtube.com/app using E61i’s web but it says "Sorry, your phone isn’t currently on our list of supported models. We are working hard to expand this list so please check again soon".
So, any one of you with N95 or E65 dare to test this app? Tell us ok
