Digia @Web Landscape

After months in development, Digia finally announced the availability of the very first public beta of it’s Webkit based internet browser for UIQ 3. Those who are interested to test the beta and provide feedback for the development, can go to Digia’s website to register and download @Web version 1.00 Beta.

There are also some support pages at Digia website to give @Web users some insights on this new browser. Among the information are :-

- @Web conformance test report
- How to access Digia @Web beta download
- @Web – User Guide
- @Web – Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some interesting stuff digged from the FAQ page :

Why did you choose Webkit? Why not Gecko (Firefox) or Presto (Opera)?

We believe that the Webkit is best choice at the moment. It provides true web rendering with quite good speed and memory usage. Gecko is a bit unsuited for mobile now, but the activities with it look promising. But also Webkit is developing and we believe it continues to be in lead.

Will the changes be contributed to open source?

Yes, Digia will contribute all improvements and modifications of open source components back to open source. Initially only the changes to the core engine parts are provided and full contribution is done after the beta phase.

How is finger touch created for @Web?

Finger touch is enabled by using UI elements suitable for finger operation and by using the touch screen such way that events created by finger press are correctly handled. Naturally the touch panel still supports also stylus operation and @Web can also be used with it. Digia @Web provide as good finger control as is possible with the resistive touch panel technology.
