Review: Nokia N81 8GB, part 2 - The camera
Posted in: Phone reviews | By: Dario Soltani | Date: February 20th, 2008 | 1 comment »

In the second part of our review on the Nokia N81 8GB (read part 1 of the N81 8GB review here) we’re going to take a look at the camera and the camera application.

The N81 8GB is equipped with a 2 megapixel camera, a single LED flash. It does however lack autofocus which is a shame. The obvious question is can it deliver decent photos? That’s exactly what I thought so I shot these pictures using the Nokia N81 8GB (2mpx) and the Nokia N95 8GB (5mpx). You don’t need to be a genius to figure out the N95 8GB will come out as a winner, but it’s still interesting looking at the difference.

Photo test

The first set of images were taken in bright sunlight and came out like this:

Unboxing Ritual - Nokia N77
Posted in: Phone reviews | By: Asri al-Baker | Date: February 13th, 2008 | No comments »

This is the unboxing ritual of Nokia N77. Pardon my accent ;-) I tried my best to speak something that everybody can understand. The video is around 6 minutes long so you can sit back, relax and enjoy. Many thanks to the WOMWorld Team for the N77.

Update: Part 2 on the N81 8GB review has been published, check it out here: Review: Nokia N81 8GB, part 2 - The camera

Introduction

Ever since the good people at WOM World sent me the Nokia N81 8GB I’ve been using it as my main device (thats about 15 days now) in order to write you guys an honest review. The N81 8GB is a cool gaming and music device with most of the other goodies you normally get with a smartphone. It’s powered by Symbian OS 9.2 and the S60 FP1 user interface. The new N-Gage gaming platform together with specially designed gaming buttons and great music capabilities such as super loud stereo speakers, 3.5mm connector for your favorite headphones and tons of storage capacity with the 8GB built-in flash memory are all nice features. But the big question still remains, is it what computers have become? Is this the next episode?

We did like

  • The 8GB memory, great to store all those music and video files.
  • WiFi, allowing us to browse the web and access entertainment cheap and smooth
  • N-Gage gaming platform and dedicated gaming keys, nothing like killing some time at the metro
  • 3.5 mm audio connector together with the Bose Quiet Comfort 3 headphones, what else you need to know?
  • Great sound quality and loud speakers

We did not like

  • The 2 megapixel camera, it’s good for…uhm…my grandma?
  • No HSDPA means slow data transfers, we want…no we demand HSDPA!
  • No built-in GPS
  • Cheap plastics
  • Gaming buttons cracked
  • The price

Archive your SMS with GSync!
Posted in: Application Reviews | By: Asri al-Baker | Date: January 22nd, 2008 | 2 comments »

image001.pngPsiLoc, as usual, breaks the conventional barrier in application development. Lately, they came out with a number of innovative applications like PsiLoc Locatik, PsiLoc SoftVariant and so on. What does GSync do? Well, to be honest, nothing… I mean, GSync is an applicationt that you need to configure once and it will run in stealth mode in the background at pre-defined time intervals to sync your SMS inbox and sentbox into your Gmail account. Wait… Does that mean we can read our text messages in our Gmail? Errr.. Yes! But only for reading, you cant compose or reply SMS from your Gmail account. Read the review after the break.

Video: Nokia N81 8GB Special Edition walkthrough Part 3
Posted in: Phone reviews | By: Dario Soltani | Date: January 15th, 2008 | 1 comment »

Here’s the third and final walkthrough video we shoot on using the Nokia N81 8GB. In this video we take a quick and rather small look at multitasking by playing music and using the browser to load the rather heavy SimplySymbian.com website (not the mobile site which also is available using the same url). There’s also a peek at the map application and the Text-to-Speech feature which is demonstrated by listening to a text message, the gallery, the videoplayer and the camera. Last but not least, we guide you through the bundled applications that are included in the standard package.

Make sure you send us all your questions and we’ll try to answer them.
